Some people say "what gets measured gets managed." When it comes to tracking your time, we tend to agree.
It's not uncommon to move through your day following your calendar, responding to urgent (but potentially not important) requests for our time, just to look back at the end of the day and think "where did the day go?"
Today's challenge focuses on really knowing where you spend your time. It's about auditing your day in 15 or 30 minute increments and then reflecting on where you are losing time.
Even if you think your day is hyper efficient, we recommend trying this exercise to give yourself the benchmark to improve (even just slightly).
Once you track your time, you can start to figure out what steps you need to take to manage your day more efficiently.
Step 1. Track your time throughout the day. Throughout your day, carry a piece of paper and a pen. List the hours from 7am through 7pm with space to make notes at ever half-hour increment. You don't need much space, as your notes can be light and fast.
Step 2. Each hour, reflect back toward the last 60 minutes. What did you accomplish?
Step 3. Audit your productivity at the end of the day. Where did your time go?
Pro Tip: Repeat this activity tomorrow. Instead of just looking back on the hour, we recommend thinking about the hour ahead.
What do you plan to accomplish in the next 60 minutes?
What is on your schedule for this hour?
Should it really take an hour?
In this way, the time-tracking activity can also help you become more conscious of your time throughout the day.
